“It is an honor to serve as president-elect of the TxLN. I have been a part of this constituent league for two years, and I look forward to growing and collaborating with our membership,” Dailey said. “We will continue to promote excellence in nursing education and create support systems for nurse educators in the great state of Texas.”

Local Church Helps Ensure Education Continues at Galen College of Nursing During Flooding
February 14, 2019 – Louisville, KY – Galen College of Nursing educates over 1,400 nursing students at its Zorn and River Road campuses. When the Ohio River hits 27 feet, however, its geography, along with rising waters, affect campus access.
So, what do they do to keep students from missing crucial class time? They rely on the kindness of the community and the amazing faculty, staff, and students willing to pick up and move operations to make sure that learning continues.
For the second year in a row, Galen has been forced to pack up its classes and operations, and relocate. “We planned for this,” said Kathy Dwyer, Senior Director of College Operations at Galen. “We went through this last year and had gone through similar events in the past, so we were familiar with watching the river gauges and knowing at exactly what stage to initiate contingency plans.”
Galen students arrived at the Northeast Christian Church, starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, and were directed by staff and faculty to their temporary classrooms at the church. Twenty-six classrooms have been set up in the church. Staff have also been set up so that operations continue as normal. “Our admissions teams are still meeting with prospective students wishing to get started in our next term; financial aid and registrars are still working with enrolling students. Even employees who don’t work directly with students are here wanting to help, just to support their co-workers and our students. It’s pretty amazing to see,” said Dwyer.
According to the National Weather Service, the Ohio River was nearing 28 feet as of noon Wednesday. But, Galen faculty and staff knew exactly what to do, said Dr. Connie Cooper, Dean of Louisville and Hazard, Kentucky, campuses.
“The second time around is easier, and this church and its members are so welcoming,” Cooper said. “We couldn’t have done this without Northeast, and we can’t thank them enough. The students have been very complimentary, and we provide lunches, snacks, and drinks every day. It has been very smooth.”
Northeast’s receptionist Beverly Gillespie might be considered a life preserver for Galen. After she was contacted by a Galen employee and fellow church member who needed her assistance during last year’s flooding, she has continued to be instrumental in working with the operations team and church leadership to accommodate Galen’s staff, faculty, and students. Over the years, Northeast also has been the site for several of the school’s graduations. Gillespie said the church officials were more than happy to open its doors to be Galen’s temporary home again.
“We have a really good team here. Our motto here at Northeast Christian Church is ‘Love the Ville’ and this is our opportunity,” she said. “God has blessed us with a nice campus, and it’s our desire to share it with the community.”
Galen students said their studies have not missed a beat, and the school has helped them to make a smooth transition despite the flooding. LPN student Liz Wolz was among the students who were in the building last year when they had to vacate and was pleased with the communication efforts to direct students to the “quiet and laid-back” church.
“They have been very thorough with communication,” she said. “I think I got two phone calls, three text messages, and an email. If you got here at the wrong time, it’s your fault,” she said laughing. “They have communicated with us very well.”
Clinical Learning Lab Coordinator Dashanda Stanton said the temporary setting has been good for Galen’s students. “In nursing, not every day is going to be textbook,” she said. “As a nurse, you have to be prepared for different scenarios whether it’s who you are working with or your environment. It’s good for them to see the bigger picture.”
Founded 30 years ago, Galen College of Nursing is one of the largest private nursing schools in the United States. With a focus solely on nursing education, the College offers practical/vocational nursing (PN/VN), associate and baccalaureate degree nursing programs to over 5,000 students on its campuses in Louisville and Hazard, Ky., San Antonio, Texas, Tampa Bay, Fla., Cincinnati, Ohio, and Online. Galen College of Nursing to Offer Master of Science in Nursing Degree Program
February 1, 2019 – Louisville, KY – Galen College of Nursing announced today that it will offer a Master of Science in Nursing, with a specialization in nursing education, in the fall of 2019. With the recent approval of its accrediting body to offer degrees at the master’s level, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the College is proud to support the ever-increasing need for advanced degree nurse educators, critical to the future of nursing.
The program will prepare graduates to teach in academic settings, as well as to lead and support staff development and continuing education within clinical facilities. “As a single-purpose nursing college, we believe this program offering serves as a strategy to help decrease the growing faculty shortage, which contributes to fewer students who can enroll in nursing programs,” said Tracy Ortelli, Ph.D., RN, CNE, ANEF, Galen’s Executive Vice President, Postlicensure Nursing. “Additional options we are considering include an Executive Nurse Leader track, a Nurse Practitioner track, Post Master’s Certificate programs, and dual credit course offerings for our baccalaureate students. These types of programs will help prepare nurses to thrive in a diverse and ever-changing healthcare environment.”
The online MSN Nurse Educator track will be 36 semester credits with courses offered over 8-week terms. Students will also be immersed in the full scope of the educator role through practicum experiences in an educational or healthcare setting. The curriculum is based on the National League for Nursing (NLN) Core Competencies of Nurse Educators and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing and prepares graduates to educate those who wish to enter or advance in the nursing profession.
The demand for nurses is growing steadily as the general population ages and an increasing number of nurses approach retirement age. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that job opportunities for nurses will grow by 15% by the year 2026, which is more than double the average rate for all occupations. This high level of growth in the field will make the role of nurse educators even more crucial well into the foreseeable future.
Said Dr. Joan Frey, Academic President, “Galen is excited to introduce a program that supports the growing need for continuing education and professional development within the country’s largest healthcare employee segment. Nurses prepared not only to teach in an academic setting but to lead clinical education and help shape health policy are essential to the provision of quality care in our country.”
Founded 30 years ago, Galen College of Nursing is one of the largest private nursing schools in the United States. Galen Announces Cincinnati Launch of 3-Year Bachelor of Science in Nursing
September 10, 2018 – Cincinnati, OH – Galen College of Nursing announced today the launch of their CCNE accredited 3-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree at the Cincinnati Campus. Offering solely nursing education, Galen is focused on supporting the nursing profession through excellence in education.
This exciting program extends the pathways to nursing available through Galen’s Cincinnati location. “We are always developing ways to meet the needs of students and ultimately, healthcare as a whole,” said Dr. Joan Frey, Academic President. Especially at a time when the U.S. is in the midst of a national nursing shortage, with an increasing need due to an aging population and the retirement of nurses from the Baby Boomer generation, nurses are in high demand. “Our mission is to expand opportunity in nursing education, and by offering more options to become an RN, we support workforce development and a diverse population of students with multiple lifestyles and learning needs.”
Galen’s new program also supports an industry with rising demand for the BSN. “We created an innovative and quality program that will allow students to get into the healthcare workplace with a BSN in a shortened timeframe,” said Judy Rudokas, Dean of Galen College in Cincinnati. “This new 3-year BSN enhances our prelicensure nursing pathways so we can educate more students for entry into professional nursing practice and help meet the needs of our partners in healthcare. We are excited to be taking applications now for our first class start on January 7th.”

Mental Health Experts Enlighten TriState High Schools
Cincinnati, OH, April 23, 2018 — Galen College of Nursing is hosting an education event, Mental Illness in the Classroom, for Tristate high school staff on Saturday, May 19, 2018. Regional, doctorally prepared experts will address the topics of teen depression, anxiety, eating disorders, suicide, and substance abuse. This free event includes breakfast and lunch, and awards continuing education credits at the Cincinnati Galen campus in Sharonville, Ohio.
“Galen supports education at all levels. High school staff help guide Tristate students into our nursing programs and we are excited to support them with this free continuing education opportunity,” states Judy Rudokas, Dean of Galen College of Nursing in Cincinnati. “As a college who educates future healthcare professionals, we believe it is an opportunity to provide valuable information on the important topic of early identification of childhood mental illness. The earlier the treatment is started, the better the life-long outcome for the child.”
Teachers, counselors, and nurses interact daily with students challenged with mental illness. Mental illness is on the rise and reports indicate that one in five students are dealing with mental health problems. This event will highlight the signs, symptoms, interventions, and community resources available for students and their families. The four presenters are local health care experts dedicated to the treatment of mental illness in children.
“Children are struggling with issues that impact their school work, relationships, and behavior,” notes Dr. Katrina Lenz, a presenter at the upcoming event. “Students will often reach out to a trusted teacher and therefore high school staff might be the first to identify a mental health problem.”
Galen College of Nursing opened its doors in 1989 and is dedicated to expanding access to quality nursing education, with over 25,000 graduates. Galen is located at 100 E. Appalachian Regional Healthcare and Galen College of Nursing Partner to Offer Associate Degree in Nursing Programs in Hazard, KY
February 2, 2017 – Hazard, KY – Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) and Galen College of Nursing announced today a partnership to offer an associate degree in nursing program at a new location based in the ARH System Center building in Hazard, Kentucky. In response to the continued and growing nursing shortage in the region, Galen College and ARH have joined together to offer additional nursing education opportunity, in support of both the local nursing workforce and the need throughout Eastern Kentucky.
“The need for nurses to support the growing demand for healthcare throughout the country is a frequent conversation. We hear concerns regularly from our partner hospitals and healthcare facilities in our campus communities,” said Audria Denker, RN, DNP, EVP Prelicensure Nursing Education at Galen. “Through connections within state nursing organizations, we had a relationship with nursing leadership at ARH and often discussed the dire need for nurses in Eastern Kentucky. Together, we asked a ‘What if?’ question, which brought us to this exciting partnership.”
“The need for nurses is great in Hazard and across the region,” said Joe Grossman, President and CEO, at ARH. “This partnership helps provide a solution to the growing need for nursing care and greater access to nursing education.”
A two-year program for those new to nursing will be offered first, with the goal to include a 15-18 month program for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to continue their education in pursuit of an RN, called an LPN to ADN Bridge, within the year as well. Additionally, Galen offers an Online RN to BSN program and can support area nurses who hold an associate degree to pursue their BSN online while they continue to work. A grand opening celebration is planned for later this spring, but the campus is now open.
The inaugural class will start March 30 at the newly renovated Galen College of Nursing at the ARH System Center located at 100 Airport Gardens Road, which was the original ARH hospital.
“A lot of people, planning, and coordination between agencies came together in less than a year to make this happen, which is extraordinary. The support from the community has been amazing and we couldn’t be happier with the decision to open this campus and to be working with ARH to make it happen,” said Mark Vogt, CEO, at Galen College of Nursing. “Our mission is about expanding opportunity in nursing. We can’t think of a better way to do it.”

Galen College of Nursing Online RN to BSN Program Receives Programmatic Accreditation by CCNE
LOUISVILLE, KY — June 3, 2016 — Today, Galen College of Nursing announces the accreditation of its Online RN to BSN program by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The CCNE is an independent accrediting agency dedicated to verifying the quality of baccalaureate, graduate and residency programs in nursing.
“Successfully achieving CCNE accreditation for Galen’s RN to BSN program is an external validation of the quality of our online program,” said Dean of Online RN to BSN, Kathy Burlingame EdD, MSN. “For students and industry partners, nursing programmatic accreditation has become the standard expected of nursing programs to ensure colleges are providing a quality educational experience.
“Galen custom-built all courses with a team of faculty, subject matter experts, and expert online instructional designers, to create unique and engaging courses.
These comprehensive courses include extensive video, interactive presentations, motion graphics, and 3D animation, ensuring that information presented to students is reinforced in various forms, for optimal learning. Galen is constantly focused on innovating online courses to assure they are presenting the best online education experience possible.
In addition to CCNE accreditation, all core courses have been Quality Matters certified, with new elective courses being submitted for certification as completed. Quality Matters is a nationally recognized, faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify the quality of online course design and online components.
“Galen is proud to offer high quality and engaging online courses, with the flexibility working RNs need to pursue their goal of higher education,” said Mark Vogt, CEO of Galen College of Nursing. “Galen’s future goals include considering additional higher education nursing programs to continue to help build the nursing workforce for the communities we serve,” said Vogt.
Due to proactive planning, Galen timed the request for a site visit from CCNE to occur prior to the first graduating class of RN to BSN students. As Burlingame said, “The timing of this visit was critical to our students as the accreditation is retroactive to the date of the site visit. This means that our first graduating class and future graduates will receive their degree from a CCNE accredited program.
“The CCNE serves the public interest by assessing and identifying programs that engage in effective educational practices.
As a voluntary, self-regulatory process, CCNE accreditation supports and encourages continuing self-assessment by nursing programs and supports continuing growth and improvement of collegiate professional education and nurse residency programs.
