Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF II/III) Grants – 

Galen College of Nursing was allocated $5,652,086 in Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds II (HEERF II) through the Department of Education on February 3, 2021. These funds were made available through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) passed in late December 2020.

Galen opened the application process and began distribution of these emergency grant funds on April 22, 2021. As of June 30th, $3,843,000 has been awarded to 5,116 eligible students. The application process will remain open until such time as all remaining funds are exhausted.
These funds are intended to assist students with expenses generally incurred by college students such as housing, transportation, personal or books/supplies. In addition, unlike the previous CARES (HEERF I) grant funds, these grants may also be used to cover emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus such as: tuition, food, housing, healthcare and childcare.

All Galen students are eligible to apply for these grant funds.  This includes all programs of study – Prelicensure Nursing, RN to BSN completion, and MSN students.

Based on guidance published by the Department of Education, institutions are required to prioritize grants to students with exceptional financial need, such as those who receive Pell Grants. Award amounts were determined utilizing several factors including Estimated Financial Contribution (EFC) from 20/21 FAFSA and enrollment status (Full time, ¾ time, Half time, Below half time) for the current term. Students who are not Title IV eligible or may not be currently utilizing Title IV grants and loans are welcome to apply as well. The award amount may be impacted if there is no current 20/21 FAFSA on file with the College.

Students currently attending any Galen program, including RN to BSN and MSN, are eligible to apply for a current award – even those students who received funds in a prior term.  We encourage students to apply who have incurred additional unforeseen expenses related to the Coronavirus pandemic.  Students do not have to meet Title IV eligibility requirements or currently utilizing Title IV grants and loans in order to participate. US citizens and eligible non-citizens are eligible to apply.

Once an application is submitted it becomes final and will be processed accordingly.

Students will need their Galen student email login and password to access the application.

A 21/22 FAFSA is not mandatory to be eligible for an award but the lack of a valid FAFSA with a Department of Education generated EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) may require additional documentation be provided to determine financial need.  It is highly recommended that students who do not have a valid 21/22 FAFSA on file with the College complete one prior to applying.

Eligible students may apply online beginning September 7, 2021 and the application will remain open until all funds are exhausted.

Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to, food, housing, utilities, technology expenses, childcare, healthcare, course materials, and tuition.

Award amounts may vary by student and are unique to each student’s circumstances.  The College is committed to distributing the funds it has received to as many eligible students in need as quickly as possible until those funds are exhausted.

We anticipate a large volume of applications and will work to process submissions as quickly as possible.  Our goal is to provide funding decisions as soon as possible, but not later than 5-7 days from the time of application.

Only the completed application is required.  The College reserves the right to request supporting documentation to determine eligibility for any student who has not completed a FAFSA at the time of application.

Applications will be processed in the order they are received, and awards mailed within 7-10 business days of initial application.  Your check will be sent to the mailing address currently on file with Galen and verified by you on the application.  No changes to address on the application will be permitted after application submission.  If you believe your current address is incorrect, you must update it PRIOR to completing the application.  You can update your address on file with the College in your Student Self Service Portal through your User Profile, which can be accessed either on the top toolbar or the side toolbar of your Self Service page.

No grant funds will be disbursed through ACH/Direct Deposit.

Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF II/III) Grants –

Galen College of Nursing signed and submitted the required Certification Agreement to the Department of Education to participate in both the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) II (CRSSA) and the HEERF III (American Rescue Plan).  The institution has received $9,046,172 to provide emergency relief funds directly to students. These funds are intended to assist students with expenses generally incurred by college students such as housing, transportation, personal or books/supplies and may also be used to cover emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus such as: tuition, food, housing, health care and childcare.

The College estimates that approximately 8,200 students are eligible to apply for emergency relief funding under these programs.  As of March 31, $8,065,360 has been awarded to 7,076 eligible students. These funds were awarded through student application and employee referral.

Based on guidance published by the Department of Education, institutions are required to prioritize grants to students with exceptional financial need, such as those who receive Pell Grants.  In November 2021, an Emergency Grant Program was established by the College to distribute the remaining HEERF III funds.  The intent of this program is to award and distribute grant funds to students who are in crisis and in need of financial assistance to continue their educational journey. These students are identified and referred by employees across the entire College.  Referrals are sent for Committee approval and final award determination.  Once award is approved by Committee, monetary awards are mailed directly to the student.  Individual awards under this program may not exceed $2000.

HIGHER EDUCATION EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND I (CARES) GRANTS:

Galen College of Nursing signed and submitted the required Certification Agreement to the Department of Education to participate in the student portion of the CARES grant funding. On April 22nd, Galen received the $4.5 million allocation from the Department of Education to provide emergency relief funds to students. Based on guidance from the Department of Education, these funds must go directly to students in the form of emergency financial aid grants for expenses directly related to the disruption of campus operations due to the spread of the Coronavirus. Eligible crisis-related expenses may include, but are not limited to, expenses for food, course materials, technology needs, health care, and dependent childcare. Students enrolled in exclusively online programs are ineligible to receive these funds according to the Department of Education.

Based on current enrollment in Galen’s ground based programs, the College estimates that approximately 6,500 students are Title IV eligible or may be Title IV eligible in order to apply for emergency relief funding under the CARES Act. All ground based students were initially notified by email of application availability and the process to apply on May 6th. Additional emails were sent in July and October to all currently active students in eligible programs who had not previously applied and received a CAREs grant. As of December 31, 2020, 5,852 students have been awarded $4,585,200. All funds have been exhausted at this time.

The amount of the awards ranges from $250 to $1000 per student. The award amounts were determined utilizing multiple factors including Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) from 19/20 (prior to July 1st) or 20/21 FAFSA, current enrollment status, dependency and housing status. Eligible students may receive only one CAREs grant at this time.
